What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy in the United States integrates western medicine with the whole person approach.

As medicine in the United States becomes more fractured and delineated by specialists, Dr. Ciammaichella, as a physiatrist and osteopath, emphasizes the interrelatedness of the body and the capability of the body of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance.

Osteopathic Manipulation Treatment (OMT) is a manual, hands-on treatment that aims to optimize the self-healing mechanisms of the body. OMT is most notable as part of the multi-modal approach to pain management. However, OMT can also assist in various other illnesses such as constipation and lymphedema.

As a fully licensed physician with prescriptive authority, Dr. Ciammaichella is able to provide healing through osteopathic manipulation treatment in addition to traditional Western medicine to optimize the self-healing mechanisms of the body.

What is a physiatrist?

A physiatrist is a physician trained in physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Physiatry is a medical specialty that focuses on restoring function, improving quality of life, and promoting independence for people with disabilities or injuries. Unlike other specialties that concentrate on a specific body system, physiatrists take a holistic approach, considering the whole person and their unique needs.

Physiatrists work to address the underlying causes of conditions and develop personalized treatment plans. They often use a combination of therapies, including:

  • Physical therapy: Exercises and modalities to improve strength, flexibility, and mobility.
  • Occupational therapy: Activities to help with daily living skills and independence.
  • Pain management: Techniques to reduce pain and discomfort.
  • Injections: Procedures to manage pain and inflammation.
  • Electrical stimulation: Therapeutic use of electrical currents to promote healing.

The goal of physiatry is to help patients achieve their optimal level of function and return to the activities they love most. By addressing both physical and emotional needs, physiatrists provide a comprehensive approach to healing and recovery.

Osteopathic Manipulation

Osteopathic Manipulation Treatment (OMT) is a manual, hands-on treatment that aims to optimize the self-healing mechanisms of the body. OMT is most notable as part of the multi-modal approach to pain management. However, OMT can also assist in various other illnesses such as constipation and lymphedema.

Rehabilitation

Some illnesses are cured (surgery for a broken leg) and some illnesses are controlled (diabetes with medications and diet change). However, there are other illnesses that are life changing that often affect how you function, how you care for yourself and others, how you work, and how you interact with your friends and loved ones. This is when you can benefit from a neurorehabilitation physiatrist who will work with you to create a lifelong rehabilitation program that is tailored to your ever changing needs.
